South Africa Safari Frequently Asked Questions

South Africa is a year-round destination. For safaris, the dry winter months (May–September) are best for wildlife viewing, while summer (November–March) is ideal for exploring Cape Town, the Winelands, and the coast.

Pack neutral clothing, a warm layer for early mornings and evenings (especially in winter), comfortable shoes, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a camera.

Several major airlines, including Delta and United, offer direct flights from their U.S. hubs to Johannesburg and Cape Town. Travelers can also connect via Europe (London, Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam) or the Middle East (Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi), which provide frequent onward flights to South Africa.

The South African Rand (ZAR). Credit cards are widely accepted.

The Type M plug is most common in South Africa, though Types D and N are also used. While many luxury lodges and hotels accommodate U.S. plugs, it’s recommended to bring a universal adapter.

Tap water is generally safe in major cities and lodges, but bottled or filtered water is preferred. Luxury hotels and lodges usually provide drinking water and refillable bottles.

Yes, comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies, evacuation, trip interruptions, and trip cancellations is required when traveling with African Travel.

Plan at least 3–4 nights at a safari lodge and another 3–4 nights in Cape Town. Many travelers also add Victoria Falls for a well-rounded trip.

Tipping is customary. Suggested guidelines: safari guides — $10–15 per person per day, trackers — $5–10 per person per day, and lodge staff — $5–10 per person per day (often pooled). U.S. dollars are welcome, and some lodges allow tips to be charged to a credit card.

South Africa safari lodges serve high-quality meals made from fresh, local ingredients. Expect a mix of international cuisine, traditional South African dishes, and fine wines. Dietary needs are easily accommodated with advance notice. In Cape Town, travelers will also find award-winning restaurants and world-class wines from nearby vineyards.

Safari regions such as Kruger are hot in summer (November–March), with temperatures reaching 90–100°F, and cool in winter (June–August), when nights can drop to around 50°F. Cape Town enjoys warm, dry summers during November–March and mild, wetter winters from June–August.

Starting in fall 2025, South Africa will roll out an e-visa/ETA program. While U.S. citizens previously did not require a visa, they will now need to obtain an e-visa prior to arrival.

No mandatory vaccinations are required unless arriving from a yellow fever risk country. Malaria prophylaxis may be recommended for certain safari regions. It’s best to check with your doctor or a travel clinic.
