South Africa is a year-round destination. For safaris, the dry winter months (May–September) are best for wildlife viewing, while summer (November–March) is ideal for exploring Cape Town, the Winelands, and the coast.
Pack neutral clothing, a warm layer for early mornings and evenings (especially in winter), comfortable shoes, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a camera.
Several major airlines, including Delta and United, offer direct flights from their U.S. hubs to Johannesburg and Cape Town. Travelers can also connect via Europe (London, Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam) or the Middle East (Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi), which provide frequent onward flights to South Africa.

Starting in fall 2025, South Africa will roll out an e-visa/ETA program. While U.S. citizens previously did not require a visa, they will now need to obtain an e-visa prior to arrival.
