Top 10 Unique Travel Experiences

  • Get up close and personal with Great White Sharks
Think of Africa and lions and elephants instantly leap to mind.  But South Africa is also undoubtedly one of the top shark dive regions in the world!  Great white shark diving at Gansbaai and Cape Town is possibly the greatest thrill that you will ever experience.  From both the boat deck and submerged in the safety of the specially designed cage, you will certainly get the view you are looking for of these magnificent and feared creatures.  A full day tour can easily be added to any of our Popular Journeys that include a stop in Cape Town.
  • Sail in a Dhow in Mozambique
This traditional wooden Arab sailing vessel provides an unforgettable way to see the coastline of Mozambique. Even to the present day, dhows make commercial journeys between the Persian Gulf and East Africa using sails as their only means of propulsion. Their cargo consists mostly of dates and fish to East Africa and mangrove timber to the Persian Gulf. They often sail south with the monsoon in winter or early spring, and back again to Arabia in late spring or early summer.
  • Try a Camel Back Riding Safari
Camel back safaris are common in hot climates with rocky terrain with short brush and dry vegetation. The central experience of the camel back riding safaris in Africa are to provide an authentic bush experience with setup camps on route on the full multi-day excursions exploring different parts of the landscape/countryside, The experience would include skilled native guides from the local surrounding communities who are familiar with routes and are able to provide a professional and safe guided experience.  Ask your Safari Specialist about Camel Riding Safaris from Sabuk Lodge in Kenya or shorter day excursions from Lewa Safari Camp which is one of the properties featured in our “Maasai to Mara“ Popular Journey.
  • See the Terrain on Horseback
Horseback safaris are geared toward avid experienced riders who have a passion for this unique safari experience as well as for new riders who are comfortable with riding horses. The “off the beaten track” riding combined with a defined route in place enable the safari guide to lead you across pockets of plains game animals, bushes, hills and slopes where vehicles are unable to penetrate.  Two of our favorites are offered from Ol  Donyo Lodge in Kenya and Camp Kalahari in Botswana.  Ask one of our specialists about this exciting adventure if you would like to add a horseback riding experience to your safari.
  • Enjoy a Balloon Ride
Visitors to the Masai Mara and Serengeti can experience the rare excitement of game viewing from a hot air balloon. Apart from the hiss of the burners, the flight above the plains is magically silent.  Float effortlessly over the tree canopy and rise over the forest and savanna. At the end of the flight, the passengers are treated to a champagne breakfast. The finishing touch to the flight is a game drive back to the lodge or camp, and the possibility of seeing the same pride of lions, or herd of elephants that had been viewed while ballooning. Ask your safari consultant about adding this experience to our Best of Kenya and Tanzania Popular Journey or any other East Africa safari.
  • Explore the Terrain on Elephant Back
Share in the ultimate African experience. View tree tops, birds’ nests, and giraffes almost face to face. Sail high above the bushveld and feel part of the environment, instead of being just a passive observer. On elephant back, you are truly an integral part of the experience.  Half day elephant safaris are easily added to any stay in the Victoria Falls area and are an included highlight to our Wild Kingdoms of Southern Africa Popular Journey safari.  For the ultimate elephant experience, consider another Popular Journey, South Africa’s Finest, which includes a 2 night stay at Camp Jabulani.  This property takes luxury to its highest level while also being devoted to the care and well-being of orphaned elephants.   Imagine an evening elephant-back safari converging on the romantic setting of a lantern lit bush – a white linen table adorned with a selection of beverages, crystal glasses, fresh flowers and delectable canapés specially prepared by the chef. It is not hard to feel that “Life is Good” as you unwind at the end of another day at Camp Jabulani.
  • Ride the Dunes on a Quad Bike
Cape Town, South Africa is rated as one of the most beautiful cities in the world mainly due to its impressive natural environment. Nestled between mountains and oceans at the southern tip of Africa, it is inspiration to some of the world’s most unique and popular adventure activities. By far the most exciting thing on 4 wheels, Quad Biking on the sand dunes is a rush like no other. Whether you’re speeding through the fast stretches or navigating the technical sections, Quadding will knock your socks off! All bikes are fully automatic. Quad Biking on the sand dunes is truly an amazing and unique experience.  Quad Biking is offered as a safari activity on the Roaring Dunes and Soaring Skies of Namibia and the Footprints of the Bushmen in Botswana, to name just a few.
  • Take a Bike Safari
For the more adventurous, join a mountain bike safari and see the bush from a completely different perspective. The experienced rangers will accompany you as you pedal your way along ancient elephant paths. The exhilaration of cycling amongst the “Giants of Mashatu” is an awesome once-in-a-lifetime experience. The mountain bike safaris are tailored to suit the fitness and strength of the riders. Herds of elephant, giraffe, wildebeest and zebra have roamed the dramatic, rugged landscape  of the Northern Tuli Game Reserve  for thousands of years. Ancient elephant paths provide cycling ‘single track’, which interlace a mosaic of undulating savanna, riparian forest, rocky outcrops and wooded floodplains.
  • Go on a Walking Safari
Today’s typical African safari holiday as enjoyed from a game-viewing vehicle is an unforgettable visual experience not to be missed. However, a vehicle safari on its own lacks the one vital element that made yesterday’s ‘true’ African safaris legendary, namely the unrivalled tactile experience of exploring the wilderness on foot.  For the truly adventuresome traveler, consider including Walking Wild on one of our added adventures to your safari.  Explore the bush with your skilled walking guide, camp under the stars and share stories around the fire.  Or for just a taste of this activity, select a camp or lodge that offers short daily excursions.  Learn about tracking techniques, medicinal plants, and gain insights into the local culture as you search for animals.
  • Give the Gift of Your Time
Voluntourism is a way of giving back to this extraordinary continent.  In as little as a few days, you can deliver tangible benefits for an orphaned child, an animal in need, or a family without a roof over their heads.  Help give back to a continent that has had a profound impact on the rest of the world and join African Travel in our efforts to protect this magical land for generations to come.
