Welcome to our Winter edition of Drumbeats, our quarterly publication that is designed to bring the rhythm of Africa into the middle of your busy lifestyle. In this issue, our focus is on the islands and coast of Africa, but look for some surprises, as all islands in Africa are not alike.

Marking her 10th anniversary with the company, Hilda loves creating family safaris almost as much as she loves being a mother. Groups are Hilda's specialty and she is skilled at custom-designing programs which incorporate such themes as 'cuisine', 'wine', 'culture' and, of course, 'children'! It's time to announce the winner of the SAFARI SCRAMBLE, which appeared in our 2004 Summer and Fall issues. The correct answer was: We are all part of earth, and earth is part of us. And the winner is... Geoff Maul, Manager of St. Armands Travel, a Virtuoso travel agency, in Sarasota, Florida. As our winner, Geoff will fly aboard South African Airways to a South Africa Safari at the Conde Naste Award winning Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town. Then to deluxe Palace of the Lost City before visiting Victoria Falls, staying at the Five-star Royal Livingstone Hotel in Zambia. A big-five safari experience at the Jackalberry Private Game Reserve adjacent to Kruger National Park completes the trip! Happy Travels to Geoff Maul, our lucky winner!

Game Viewing Tip: Make sure to pack a pair of binoculars. Not only are they a "must" for your game drives, but it is great fun to espy wildlife from the comfort of your bush tent or chalet.

Safari Tip:
Never leave your wildlife tent or lodge with doors and windows ajar. Monkeys love to explore, and an open window is just too much of a temptation. More than one safari enthusiast has seen their toothbrush gallop off into the bush in the clutches of a triumphant baboon!

Waterbucks have a gland at the base of their tails, which secretes a thick black liquid and serves as a natural insect repellent. Not only do the tsetse flies stay away, but the lions keep their distance, as well: thinking that the waterbuck must taste as awful as they smell!

Where? Seychelles.
What? A rare sanctuary for guests seeking relaxation and romance on a gorgeous, unspoiled tropical private island...

Located around the two main islands of Mahé and Praslin, North Island, is one of forty inner granitic islands of the Seychelles, with three mountains, a small lake and four beaches located at each end. There are only eleven 5,000 square foot guest villas on the entire island. Each villa, comprises a luxurious air-conditioned bedroom with overhead fans, fully retracting sliding windows with views onto the beach, and a huge en-suite bathroom, including large bath, indoor and outdoor shower. All the structures at North Island Lodge are individually handcrafted to give it a unique atmosphere and the distinct flavor of the Seychelles. The main areas and all the villas are built directly on the eastern beach: a lounge, dining room and library, beautifully located health spa and gym, world-class dive center, and a beautiful swimming pool are all built into a granite outcrop. A sunset bar is tucked away on the western beach of the island. North Island is renowned as one of the most romantic ocean destinations in the world.

Where? Zambia, Kenya & Botswana.
What? Safari & Islands!

In Africa, one can be on an island that has nothing to do with sun and sand. In Zambia, Livingstone Island is perched on the edge of the Victoria Falls, where one can have a private lunch in the very midst of a thundering mass of water! Just upstream is Sindabezi Island Camp, a private island paradise nestled in the waters of the Zambezi. Book a room or reserve the whole island bush camp and enjoy canoeing and hippos from specially designed boats. Hidden from the world within Botswana's Okavango Delta and situated just off the north-western tip of Chiefs Island, is the secret paradise of Mombo Camp where it is not impossible to see up to twelve different mammal species from the comfort of your veranda! The camp has nine luxuriously furnished tents, raised off the ground, allowing game to wander freely through the camp while allowing for guest safety. Up in Kenya, Rusinga Island, in the middle of Lake Victoria, is frequented by fly-in fishing safaris. Rich in fossils, the skull of 'proconsul Africanus' was found here dating back three million years ago.

Where? Tanzania.
What? Spice Island & Diver's Paradise...

Mnemba Island Lodge is situated on an exclusive island just 2.8 miles off the north-eastern tip of Zanzibar in the azure Indian Ocean. Surrounded by an atoll of breathtaking coral reefs, it boasts some of Africa's most wonderful dive sites. Mnemba offers a privacy and rustic exclusivity unparalleled on the African coastline. The Zanzibar Archipelago and its 'Spice Islands', discovered by Arab traders in the 8th century, are bathed in the heady scents and romance of a bygone era. Traditional dhows (coastal Arab sailing vessels) drift across the horizon, and gentle soft-spoken islanders tend to your every need. You may fill your days relaxing on the soft white-sand beaches or indulging in irresistible pursuits in the gloriously warm waters. Fresh fruit, fish and shellfish are served daily, and romantic candle-lit dinners at the water's edge will capture your soul.
