Game Viewing Tip: Please respect your ranger’s judgement about your proximity to certain wild animals. Don’t insist that he take the vehicle closer so you can get a better photograph. A vehicle driven too close can hinder a hunt, or cause animals to abandon a hard-earned meal.
Customs & Manners Tip: Here are some interesting customs to keep in mind for East Africa. Try to exchange greetings in Swahili "Hello" is pronounced sah-lahm-ah and "How are you?" is pronounced hah-bah-ree. Don’t expect people to smile when you meet in Tanzania. This is a signal of politeness, not unfriendliness.

A safari to Africa is a life-long ‘dream come true’. African Travel, Inc. is dedicated to assisting our customers create, plan and experience the best possible safari adventure. By sharing our knowledge, experience and expertise, our simple mission is to breath life into fantasies and help our clients truly ‘live the dream’…

Where? Kenya. What? East Africa’s most exquisite bush homes set against the backdrop of the sweeping savannah!
Discriminating clients seeking a safari away from typical tours have been enjoying Kenya’s Bush Homes. These living museums sleep fewer guests, and are as individual and eclectic as their owners. Deloraine, built in 1920 by Lord Francis Scott celebrates colonial European styles and Ol Donyo Wuas, pays tribute to natural materials using fallen olive trees to fashion furniture, and bright fabrics, purchased from the bustling fabric bazaar in Nairobi’s Biashara Street, honor ethnic Africa. At Loisaba guests luxuriate in a four-poster Star bed, resplendent with down duvet, atop an elevated handcrafted platform, partially covered by a thatched roof. Each homemade ‘Mukokoteni’ (‘bed on wheels’) can be wheeled onto the open deck for a night under the stars!

Where? Tanzania. What? Returning to the original essence of “safari” with more intimate camps in Tanzania.
Those questing something wilder while still luxurious are the right match for these camps sleeping a maximum of 24 persons. In the game-rich Serengeti, we recommend two excellent camps: Klein’s and Grumeti. For adventurers wishing to explore new areas, we offer the Selous Safari Camp or Jongamero in Ruaha. An ideal ending is to relax on Mnemba Island or at Ras Kutani, on the Tanzanian Coast. A custom adventure can be crafted, or is ready-made with our ‘Great Migration’ Safari!

Where? Kenya. What? Step back into the romantic era of Denys Finch-Hatton…
For a grand style safari reminiscent of a golden bygone age our top pick is Cottars 1920s Camp, where each tent is furnished with four-poster beds, ostrich feather filled quilts and 1920s safari antiques; and each bathroom contains a classic canvas bathtub filled on demand. The sounds of an authentic 1920s gramophone fill the air as dinner is served by candlelight with silver and crystal. Fine French wines partner the gourmet meal and port and cigars complete the night. Next morning, at the camp’s site in the eastern Masai Mara, Calvin Cottar and his expert guides share an unrivaled knowledge of Africa as they lead our guests out game viewing…far from the madding crowd!

Where? Uganda and Rwanda. What? Gorillas…179 to be exact!
High in the mountainous jungles, track these elusive and most human of creatures. Sit no more than a body’s length away as they play and build their nests. Only sixty permits are available daily for the lucky visitors who return wide-eyed to tell the tale. Habituated gorillas can be visited for one hour in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda and Parc National des Volcans (PNV) in Rwanda.
We recommend the Volcanoes Safaris Eco-lodges, which employ a distinctive approach, using indigenous materials and ensuring that local communities benefit from the lodge operations. In June, Virungas Lodge opened for guests wishing to trek in PNV. The spectacular location, overlooking two lakes and 6 of the Virunga volcanoes, together with the great style and superb service, make for an unforgettable stay. Our staffers, Susannah Zani and Jane Behrend have recently visited this magnificent area.

Have you heard that our African Travel staff just returned from a fun-filled company retreat to Las Vegas! Several of our African suppliers including airlines, luxury trains, lodges and hotels flew over to make presentations and help us refine the tools we need to guide our clients’ travels. An African costume party (right) topped off the weekend! Best Costume winners won trips to different parts of the continent -- Susannah dressed as a flamingo won a South Africa safari, and Jennifer as Protea Princess (South Africa’s national flower) is off to Namibia!
