FALL 2007
Brena Pouncy
Air Expert Exra-ROAR-dinare

As one of our air department 'gurus', Brena is an expert about all things Africa and air. After many years in the travel industry, we were fortunate to have found and enticed Brena to join African Travel. She is adept at booking individuals as well as groups and has, in fact, handled some of the largest groups that our company has ever sent to Africa. Brena is a whiz at SABRE and is very familiar with all of the carriers that service our safari destinations in Africa. However, if you ask, you'll find that Emirates is Brena's favorite airline. She feels that, if your budget doesn't allow for business class seats, there's no better way to fly to Africa than Emirates economy class.

10 THINGS YOUR MOTHER WOULD NOT WANT YOU TO DO (IN AFRICA)
1.
Jump aboard a microlight and swoop over Victoria Falls.
2. Jump overboard to meet the great white shark while cage diving along the coast of South Africa.
3. Like Stanley and Livingstone, explore the mighty Zambezi River via canoe, paddling amongst the crocs and hippos.
4.Put on your leather and explore Cape Town on a Harley Davidson...drive yourself or ride the comfy sidecar.
5. Leap off the bridge at Victoria Falls with a bungee cord attached to your ankles.
6.
Walk with the lion cubs of Zimbabwe, hold their tails, scratch their ears, and hear them purr.
7.
Track the unpredictable rhino on foot at Phinda Private Game Reserve.
8. Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and wave to the world from its icy peak.
9. Charter a bare boat through the spectacular coral reefs of the Seychelles Islands.
10. Walk deep into the burial chambers in Valley of the Kings where mummies of Egyptian royalty still reign.

Beat the Kenyan traffic!
Clients arriving into Nairobi during the morning rush hour can avoid the traffic by requesting a transfer through the Nairobi National Park (Kenya's first National Park). It's an exciting way to start a safari, and time well spent outside the "hustle and bustle" of Nairobi at work. There's a fine variety of game to be seen in the park, and the wildlife is more camera-friendly than many animals found in the bush.

When I arrived in August after an international overnight flight, I asked my driver to take me through the Park as I had a couple of hours to spare before appointments in the city. Near the end of a wonderful safari drive we found a large herd of giraffe and zebra blocking the park's exit route. With this delay I arrived late for my first meeting! It just goes to show... anything can happen in Africa, where animals have the right of way!

P.S. Kenya is so popular now - airline seats are much in demand. Don't rely on redeeming your frequent flyer mileage points for your airline tickets. Reserve and purchase your safari now on the date that YOU want to travel. And use those mileage points to buy luggage, safari clothing, photographic equipment or other travel items.

Our entire trip was absolutely wonderful. Not a flaw, everything right on time, no delays. Everyone was very courteous and helpful. We felt very safe. Thank you so much for a trip well planned.
R.R., Charlevoix, MI

Why do elephants flap their ears?
To regulate their temperature. The backs of the ears are well supplied with blood vessels and, as they are flapped, the blood is cooled.

Where? Luxor
What? Tut! Tut! Tut!

November marks King Tut's public debut. 85 years after the 3,000 year old mummy was discovered in Luxor's famed Valley of the Kings, the linen wrapped King Tut was put on public display for the first time on Sunday, November 4, 2007. Known to his family and followers as "Tut", he is making history as his body was removed from its sarcophagus and displayed in a see-through airtight preservation chamber. The mystery surrounding King Tutankhamen and his glittering gold tomb has entranced Egyptologists since Carter first discovered the hidden tomb in 1922. In an effort to try to solve the mysteries of how he died and his precise royal lineage, scientists removed Tut's mummy from his tomb and scanned it to obtain a three dimensional image. The results ruled out that he was violently murdered, but were inconclusive as to how he died over 3,000 years ago. Experts believe, that before dying, Tut broke his left thigh, which eventually contributed to his death. The mummy now remains in the tomb indefinitely, unlike other Egyptian royal mummies displayed in the museums. The face of Tutankhamen is different from any king in the Cairo museum. Even with his buck teeth, you are able to see a little bit of a smile on the face of the golden boy.
