As the great wave of time washes over us, the 'economic meltdown of 2009' will be relegated to a chapter in our grandchildren's history books. But for those of us living through it, we have all personally felt the effects of this fiscal phenomina. Although the travel business has been hit hard, it is a fact that Africa has weathered this storm better than most. Why? Perhaps because Africa is not just another vacation destination. Or a place to wile away the summer months. A safari to Africa is more akin to a life-changing event. It is as emotionally significant as your wedding day, finally buying that dream house or your first grandchild. Even when times are hard, none of us stop dreaming or celebrating our lives' milestones. New cars and clothes may be crossed off the list but a 'pilgrimage' to Africa remains at the top.


I am grateful our company has pulled through these challenging times. But I am even more profoundly thankful that my life's work is so intricately woven into the compelling tapestry of Africa: the most fascinating continemt on our planet.

USTOA member companies have met the travel industry's highest standards, including participation in the association's Traveler Assistance Program, which among other things protects consumer payments up to $1 million in case the company goes out of business.
